Missionary Spotlight | Andrew & Lacy Sexton

Missionary Spotlight
Andrew & Lacy Sexton
Meet Andrew and Lacy Sexton. Andrew is one of our senior designers. His designs are featured on our Casas por Cristo merchandise, website, and publications. He works hard to make sure Casas looks good. And of course, he guides our volunteer teams in building homes for the impoverished in México, too.
INTERVIEW WITH ANDREW

1. Tell a little bit about yourself and where you're from.
  • Andrew: I am from St. Louis Missouri, I went to the University of Central Missouri to study Graphic Design.
  • Lacy: I'm from Kansas City, Missouri. I went to the University of Central Missouri (where Andrew and I met) and received a Bachelor of Social Work degree. Now I take care of the administrative and financial responsibilities at Paseo Christian Church.
2. What made you choose to serve at Casas por Cristo?
  • I grew up wanting to do something ministry related but not wanting to work in a church. When I went on my first trip with Casas, I knew it would be the perfect match for me. I love working hands on. At Casas I am able to do that with my design work and with building.
3. How have you seen God through your ministry at Casas por Cristo?
  • I have seen him in the preparation for me coming here. In college I took a lot of classes for printing, not knowing why, but just because I enjoyed it. Now I print all the Casas promotional material and merchandise. It's crazy to think that if I had not taken those classes I would not have been prepared for this stuff.
4. What has been your biggest challenge so far?
  • Time. My wife can attest to this.
Prayer Requests
  • Pray for our finances because that is part of our life right now that is not consistent yet.
  • Please pray for the upcoming year in general, our jobs, and our lives down here in El Paso.

Family Spotlight | Acuña, México | September 2015

Family Spotlight
Ciudad Acuña, México

Manuel & Family
Volunteers from Hope Christian Church
Meet Manuel Aguero Romo and his family. Manuel is over 90 years old. He worked for many years as a street sweeper for the city of Acuña, México. He loves the Lord and is still spunky and full of life, though his hands are scarred and permanently calloused from a lifetime of hard work and difficult circumstances. He, his wife Rosa María, his daughter Lupita, his son-in-law Alejandro, and his grandson Victor live off a small pension from the city. We are so grateful that Hope Christian Church drove all the way from Columbia, Illinois and endured the extreme summer heat to build a safe home for Manuel and his family. Before the team arrived, the family had been living in a small block house that could not stand up to the elements. When it rained, they couldn't sleep because their only bed got soaked. Rosa María shared at the dedication that she spent the last few years pleading with God to provide for her family, crying, "When will we get a house that doesn't leak?" She never thought it was going to happen. Now, they have a dry and secure place to call home. Praise God for providing for this family!

Alejandro & Lupita
Alejandro Studying
Newlyweds Alejandro and Lupita have spent the last two months sharing a one room block home with Lupita's parents and son. Alejandro proudly showed us the formal white dress and commemorative photos from their special day. Alejandro loves studying the Bible and preaching at his church. He showed us the notes he has been taking in a personal Bible study workbook. However, he did not have a Bible of his own to study, which made things difficult. Alejandro asked the team for a Bible in Spanish each day when we left the work site. So, at the home dedication ceremony, Alejandro was overjoyed to be handed exactly what he had asked for. Now, Alejandro will be able to study on his own and prepare sermons for his church from his very own Bible.

Victor & Manuel
Victor in his new room
Victor, Manuel's grandson, is sixteen years old. He loves spending time with his family, helping to care for his aging grandparents, and watching wrestling, which is his favorite hobby. He has so few belongings and resources to enjoy his hobby, but that does not stop him. He proudly showed the team an incredibly intricate 3-D model of a wrestling ring and individual wrestlers he had created using notebook paper, tape, markers, and other small craft items. Victor had little to offer to the team of volunteers to thank them for building a house for his family, but he gave what he had. He gave all of his home-made wrestling figures as gifts to individual team members. At the end of the week, the team members bought a few housewarming gifts to help the family furnish their new home. When Victor saw the gifts he nearly broke down in tears. The team had also purchased a special gift for him, a large John Cena figurine, which Victor said he will always cherish.

Missionary Spotlight | Jason & Janette Roth & Family

Missionary Spotlight
Jason & Janette Roth & Family
Meet Jason Roth, his beautiful wife Janette, and their twin boys Caleb and Thomas. Jason is our Finance Manager. He works diligently to ensure that CpC remains fiscally responsible. He also leads volunteer teams on home building projects in México and Guatemala.

INTERVIEW WITH JASON
1. Tell a little bit about yourself and where you're from.
  • Janette and I are both from Indiana, albeit from different towns. We first met while we were attending Ball State University, but we never started dating until we were both here on staff at Casas por Cristo. Janette was the Intern and Volunteer Manager up until we had the boys. I originally started as a Site Coordinator, but I switched positions in 2011 to fill a vacancy that we had in the Finance Department. I couldn't imagine anyone else here thriving in a position where you sit in front of a computer all day and just crunch numbers!
  • As far as interests, I enjoy following my favorite teams (Colts, Blues, Pacers, and St. Louis Cardinals). I jog solely because it's good for my health, but I enjoy shooting hoops. And I love games of any kind, especially tabletop games because you get to play those with your friends. Janette and I like to have friends over for dinner and games regularly. Lastly, I'm eagerly awaiting the boys getting a little older so I have a reason to get my Lego collection out of storage in the garage!
2. What made you choose to serve at Casas por Cristo?

  • I first experienced a Casas build in 2003 as part of a Spring Break trip with my campus ministry. I wound up having what I considered the best week of my life to that point! I loved many aspects of the week, but the thing that struck me most was the tangibility of it all. We can talk about loving people a lot as the Church, but here was a chance to really love by doing. When the talk is paired with action, people respond. And when the Church works together, God can accomplish amazing things through us! After three Spring Break trips, I wound up doing a couple of internships here, and by then I was hooked. I can't imagine being anywhere else now.
3. How have you seen God through your ministry at Casas por Cristo?

  • He's everywhere! Through hindsight, I can see how he orchestrated me getting here. Throughout the years, I've seen Him in the ways he has provided for me and now my family. I get to see His Spirit moving and working in a different culture all the time. It's one of the most valuable parts of experiencing a Casas build, in my opinion. Seeing fruits of the Spirit displayed in another language and culture is encouraging and humbling. Sometimes I will see Him in a Pastor or family member's actions. Sometimes I will see Him in the team members as they love on people. Sometimes I even get to see Him in team members' stories of how they were able to come on the trip - stories of God's provision and timing.
4. What has been your biggest challenge so far?

  • Twin babies! It will always be a unique situation with twins, but at this point, I don't imagine they are more difficult or challenging than having two kids. But when they were babies? We like to say that we just survived that first year! Here we are, first-time parents, and God decided to add a second baby to the mix. It is by far the most difficult thing I've ever had to do, and they still continue to remind me of how selfish I am!
5. What are some things people should be praying for on your behalf?

  • Our boys are almost four now, so we are going to be making some decisions on what to do for schooling in the not-too-distant future. We would love any and all prayers for guidance and wisdom in that decision. Otherwise, everybody is currently healthy, and we don't have any complaints. I guess just pray for God's continued provision and that we would be sensitive to His leading.
